What is a URL QR code?

A URL QR code is the most common type of QR code. It encodes a web address directly in the image. When someone scans it, their phone opens the URL in the browser. The destination can be anything publicly accessible: a website, landing page, social media profile, PDF hosted on Google Drive, Dropbox, or any cloud service, a product page, a restaurant menu, or a YouTube video.

For shorter, cleaner QR codes (fewer modules = faster scanning), shorten your URL first using bit.ly or another URL shortener. This is especially useful for QR codes that will be printed small (under 3×3 cm). However, avoid shorteners if you need the QR code to work reliably for years — link shorteners can shut down or change their behaviour.

URL best practices for QR codes

📏
Keep it short
URLs under 100 characters create cleaner QR patterns. Use HTTPS and remove UTM parameters for the primary code (track with a redirect instead).
🔒
Use HTTPS
Always use HTTPS URLs. HTTP URLs generate a security warning in most modern QR scanners, reducing trust and conversion.
🔄
Use a redirect
If the URL might change, create a permanent redirect at a stable URL (e.g. yourdomain.com/menu). You can update where it points without reprinting the QR.
Test before print
Always scan the generated QR code on both iOS (Camera app) and Android before committing to a print run. Check the URL resolves correctly.

Frequently asked questions

What URLs can I use in a QR code?
Any publicly accessible URL: websites, landing pages, social profiles, Google Drive PDFs, Dropbox files, YouTube videos, or any http/https link. The URL must work without a password.
Should I shorten my URL before making a QR code?
For URLs over 200 characters, shortening helps — fewer modules means faster scanning at small sizes. For most URLs under 150 characters, shortening is not necessary. Avoid third-party shorteners for permanent use cases.
Can I change the URL after creating the QR code?
No — static QR codes encode the URL permanently in the image. To change the destination without reprinting, host a redirect at a stable URL (e.g. yourdomain.com/promo) and change where it redirects. The QR code stays the same.
Does the QR code expire?
No. QRLifetime creates static QR codes — the URL is embedded in the image itself. They work forever, even offline, with no server or subscription.
